Private Gabala and Shamakhi Tour from Baku – Your Own Route

Overview

  • Tour Type:Private tour
  • Language:Arabic, Azerbaijan, English, Italian, Russian, Spanish, Turkish
The Gabala route has more worth stopping for than a single day can hold. A fixed departure has to choose four stops and stick to them; a private Gabala tour lets you decide which places get your time — and add others that a group schedule has no room for.

You travel in your own vehicle with an English or Russian-speaking driver, from hotel pickup in Baku to the cable car at Tufandag Mountain Resort and back. The core route stays the same: Shamakhi Juma Mosque, Nohur Lake, the Seven Beauties Waterfall at Vandam, and the mountain. What you do around it is yours to shape.

Itinerary

Hotel Pick-up

Your driver will pick you up directly from your hotel lobby or designated accommodation. Settle into a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle as we set off for the tour.

Shamakhi Juma Mosque

Shamakhi was the seat of the Shirvanshahs centuries before Baku took that role, and its Juma Mosque is among the oldest surviving in the Caucasus — rebuilt more than once after earthquakes, and still in use today. It sits roughly halfway to Gabala, which makes it the natural first stop of the morning.

Nohur Lake

Nohur Lake sits in forested hills just outside Gabala, green-blue and quiet, with bare trunks standing in the shallows. On a private schedule this is where guests most often linger — there are boats to hire and cafés along the bank, and no reason to leave before you want to.

Seven Beauties Waterfall (Vandam)

The Seven Beauties Waterfall falls in tiers through a gorge at Vandam village, with staircases connecting the levels. Reaching the upper platforms takes some climbing. If anyone in your group would rather not, they can wait at the lower level or in the car — a flexibility a group tour cannot easily offer.

Tufandag Mountain Resort

Tufandag Mountain Resort is the end point of the day. The cable car climbs in stages above Gabala to viewpoints over the Caucasus ridge, and the resort runs year-round — skiing in winter, walking and the alpine roller coaster in the warmer months. Your driver waits until you are finished rather than at a set hour.

Hotel Drop-off

After completing the tour, your driver will comfortably transfer you back to your hotel or drop you off at your preferred central location in the city.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a fully private tour?

Yes — only your group travels, in your own vehicle, with no other pickups.

Is the price per person or per vehicle?

Per vehicle. The total depends on the category of car you choose, not on how many of you there are, so larger groups get better value per head.

Can we add the Alpaca Farm?

Yes, on request, and it does not change the vehicle price. Only the entrance fee at the farm is paid separately, on site.

Can we add Abqora Wine House?

Yes, also on request and also with no change to the vehicle price. Tasting or entrance fees, where they apply, are paid at the wine house.

Can we change the schedule during the day?

Yes. Stay longer at Nohur Lake, skip the waterfall climb, leave the resort earlier or later — tell the driver and the day adjusts. Larger changes, such as adding a stop, are easier if we know in advance.

Is the Tufandag cable car included?

No. Activity tickets at Tufandag Mountain Resort are bought on site: 20 AZN for the cable car, or 49 AZN for the roller coaster, which already covers the ride up.

How far is Gabala from Baku?

Around 220 kilometres, three to four hours each way depending on road conditions and how often you stop.

Is a guide included?

The driver speaks English or Russian and knows the route. A licensed guide is available for an extra charge and is worth considering if you want the history of Shamakhi and the region explained in depth.
