Continue Browsing Trips• Valid identification is required for every traveller. Bring your passport or ID card on the day — the journey is not possible without it.
• Book ahead. The travel permit has to be arranged before departure, so last-minute bookings cannot always be accommodated
• The itinerary may vary with road conditions and current regulations; where a site cannot be visited, an alternative in the region is offered instead.
• Shusha stands at around 1,400 metres and is markedly cooler than Baku — bring a jacket in any season.
• Comfortable walking shoes are recommended; the ground at the historic sites is uneven.
• Modest dress is expected at the mosque, and women should bring a scarf for their head.
• Photography may be restricted in some areas; please follow your driver’s or guide’s instructions.
• The total price is based on the vehicle category (Sedan, Vito, Sprinter), not per person.
Your driver collects you from your hotel at whatever time you have chosen. Stop for coffee, photographs or a break whenever you want — this is the part of the day where a private vehicle is felt most.
You enter through the old walls. Shusha Fortress enclosed a city that grew into the political and artistic capital of the region, and long stretches of the ramparts and several gates still stand, including the Ganja Gate on the northern side. The setting explains the choice of site better than any description: sheer drops on three sides, a single approach, and a plateau wide enough to hold a city. In 2021 Shusha was named the cultural capital of Azerbaijan, and restoration work has been under way across the old quarter since.
Jidir Duzu is the open plateau on the eastern edge of the city, historically the ground where horse races and public gatherings were held. Today it is visited for the view — the land runs flat to the rim and then falls away into the Dashalti gorge, with ridge after ridge of Karabakh mountains beyond. Light matters here: early morning and late afternoon are considerably better than the flat glare of midday, which is one of the practical advantages of choosing your own start time.
Molla Panah Vagif served as vizier to the Karabakh khan in the 18th century while writing the poetry that made him one of the defining figures of Azerbaijani literature. The mausoleum built in his memory stands on high ground near the plateau's edge, and the Vagif Poetry Days once held here have been revived in recent years.
The Yukhari Govhar Agha Mosque — the "upper" mosque, distinguishing it from the lower one elsewhere in the city — is the principal historic mosque of Shusha. It carries the name of Govhar Agha, the khan's daughter whose endowment paid for it, and its pair of patterned brick minarets rise directly above the main square. Two madrasa buildings flank the courtyard.
Isa Spring (Isa Bulagi) lies in woodland a short drive from the city and has been a favourite place to escape the summer heat for generations. It is a brief, easy stop — somewhere to drink cold water, walk under the trees and break up the run of historical sites.
Khurshidbanu Natavan, daughter of the last khan of Karabakh, was known simply as Khan Qizi — the Khan's Daughter. Beyond her own poetry she founded the literary circle Majlisi-uns in Shusha, which drew the region's writers together for decades. The house museum tells that story alongside her life and her public works in the city.
The route then continues to Khankendi, the largest city in the region, driving through the centre past the Parliament Building, the Nana Baba monument and the main squares. With a private vehicle you can stop for photographs where you like rather than viewing everything through a window.
Lunch is not included, but your driver can stop at a local restaurant at a time that suits you rather than at a fixed slot in a group schedule.
You set off back in the late afternoon and are dropped off directly at your hotel in Baku, usually in the evening depending on how the day has been paced.
