Your driver collects you from your hotel at the time you have chosen, and the first stop comes quickly — Masazir Lake lies only a short drive from the city. The water here is intensely saline, far saltier than the Caspian, and the colour comes from microscopic organisms that thrive in exactly those conditions and produce a red pigment as they do. The result ranges from a pale rose to a deep watermelon pink depending on the temperature, the salinity and the angle of the sun.

Salt has been harvested here for a long time, and the crusted white banks around the edge are part of what makes the photographs work: a hard white rim, pink water, and very little else. You have free time to walk along the shore and shoot it from different angles. The pink lake in Baku is at its strongest in hot, dry weather.

From the lake the route runs north along the highway towards Quba, with the Caspian on one side and rising ground on the other. The landscape becomes bare and increasingly colourful as you approach Khizi — you will start noticing red and white banding in the hills well before the main viewpoint, and this is where a private vehicle earns its cost, because you can stop at any of them.

The Candy Cane Mountains are the reason people make this drive. Layers of sediment rich in iron oxide were laid down horizontally over millions of years, then folded and tilted upright by the same tectonic pressure that raised the Caucasus. What remains is a series of hills wrapped in diagonal stripes of rust red, cream white and soft pink, running clean across the slopes as though painted on.

There is nothing built here — no ticket office, no fence, no path. You walk out among the ridges, and the scale only becomes clear when someone stands at the base of one. Overcast light flattens the colours considerably, so clear weather makes a real difference to what you take home. The Candy Cane Mountains in Azerbaijan lie roughly 100–120 km from the capital.

On request, the route can include Beshbarmaq — the "Five Finger" mountain that rises abruptly beside the same highway. A stairway climbs to a shrine near the summit, and the view back over the coastal plain and the Caspian is the widest of the day. Add it when booking so the timing can be planned in.
