Private Shahdag Tour from Baku – Your Own Car, Your Own Timing

Overview

  • Tour Type:Private tour
  • Language:Arabic, Azerbaijan, English, Italian, Russian, Spanish, Turkish
On a 200-kilometre mountain route, the difference between a shared bus and your own car is not comfort — it is time. A private Shahdag tour from Baku lets you decide when to leave, how long to stay at each viewpoint, and when to turn back. Skiers leave at first light to catch the morning slopes. Photographers stop at the Candy Cane Mountains while the light is still low. Families set off after breakfast and cut the day short if the children have had enough.

The route itself is the classic one: Five Finger Mountain, the striped hills of Khizi, and Shahdag Mountain Resort high in the Greater Caucasus — with Laza village as an optional extension. What changes is that the schedule belongs to you.

Highlights

  • Skiing — lifts run from morning; an early start buys you three or four extra hours on the snow
  • Photography — the Candy Cane Mountains and Beshbarmag look their best in early or late light, not at noon
  • Summer heat — leaving at dawn means the long drive happens before the day warms up
  • Winter daylight — dark by five, so an early departure is the only way to get full value from the mountain
  • Small children — a later start and an earlier return beats a rigid twelve-hour block

Itinerary

Hotel Pick-up

Your driver will pick you up directly from your hotel lobby or designated accommodation. Settle into a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle as we set off for the tour.

Five Finger Mountain

Five Finger Mountain — Beshbarmag — rises straight out of the coastal plain about an hour north of Baku, its five stone points visible long before you reach them. It is both a landmark and a place of pilgrimage. On a group tour this is a ten-minute photo stop; with your own car you can walk up toward the base if you want to.

Candy Cane Mountains

In the Khizi region the hillsides turn red, white and cream, striped in diagonal bands of iron-rich sediment. There is no other landscape like it in Azerbaijan. Sunlight angle changes these hills completely, which is why the departure time you choose matters more here than anywhere else on the route.

Shahdag Mountain Resort

Shahdag Mountain Resort Azerbaijan sits high in the Greater Caucasus and runs all year: skiing and snowboarding in winter, cable-car sightseeing, hiking and the alpine roller coaster in the warmer months. You have free time here to do as much or as little as you like, and your driver waits until you are ready to leave rather than at a set hour.

Optional: Laza Village

Laza lies beyond the resort in a valley ringed by cliffs and waterfalls — a working highland village rather than a resort, and the most striking scenery on this side of the range. It is an optional extension charged separately; because it adds driving time, it is far easier to fit into a private schedule than a shared one.

Hotel Drop-off

After completing the tour, your driver will comfortably transfer you back to your hotel or drop you off at your preferred central location in the city.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a fully private tour?

Yes. The vehicle and driver are yours alone — no other guests join, and no other pickups are made on the way.

Can we choose our own departure time?

Yes, and on this route it is the main reason to book privately. Early starts are popular in winter for skiing and in summer for the light and the cooler drive.

Can we change the itinerary?

Yes. You can skip a stop, spend an extra hour at the Candy Cane Mountains, add Laza, or drive straight to the resort and spend the whole day there. Tell the driver on the day or let us know in advance.

Is a guide included?

The tour includes an English or Russian-speaking driver. A licensed guide who accompanies you and explains the region is available for an extra charge — useful if you want the geology of the Candy Cane Mountains and the history of the Guba valleys explained properly.

Are activity tickets at the resort included?

No. The cable car, roller coaster, ski passes and equipment hire are all paid at Shahdag Mountain Resort itself, so you only pay for what you actually use.

How far is Shahdag from Baku?

Around 200 kilometres, three to four hours each way depending on road and weather conditions. With stops, the full day runs to about twelve hours — less if you choose to shorten it.

Can we stay overnight and return later?

Yes. We drop you at your resort hotel and arrange the return transfer for the day and time you want, rather than tying you to a scheduled departure.

Does the tour run in winter?

All year. Winter is the busiest season at the resort thanks to the snow, and a private vehicle makes travelling with ski clothing and equipment considerably simpler.
