Five Finger Mountain — Beshbarmag — marks the first hour of the drive, a limestone ridge with five stone points standing over the coastal plain. It is viewed from the road on this route; with your own vehicle you can stop as long as the photographs need.

The Candy Cane Mountains in the Khizi region are layered in red and white, the bands running diagonally across bare hillsides. Light angle transforms them completely, which is one more argument for choosing your own departure time.

Above Guba the road runs into the pine forest at Gachrash. The air cools, the landscape closes in, and the drive becomes genuinely scenic rather than simply long.

Eagle Height is the first place the full range opens up — an exposed shoulder of road with valleys on both sides and ridges layered into the distance. A natural place to stretch your legs before the last climb.

Khinalig — also written Khinalug or Xınalıq — sits at around 2,300 metres, the highest permanently inhabited village in Azerbaijan. Its stone houses are terraced up the slope, one roof serving as the next yard up. The community speaks its own language, unrelated to any spoken in the surrounding valleys, and its seasonal migration route with the flocks is recognised by UNESCO. Given how far you have come, this is where the extra time a private tour buys you is worth the most.

The village mosque and the small museum beside it hold the local record: tools, carpets, household objects and photographs kept by village families. Half an hour here explains more about highland life than the drive up does.

Below the village the Qudyalchay has carved a deep gorge through the rock. We stop above it on the way back, when the afternoon light picks out the far wall and the road you drove up in the morning.
