Private Ganja – Goygol Tour from Baku (2 Days / 1 Night)

Your driver collects you from your hotel in Baku in the morning. The drive west covers around 360 km and takes 4–5 hours, with comfort stops along the way. You arrive in Ganja in time for an afternoon city tour.

Javad Khan was the last ruler of the Ganja khanate, killed in 1804 defending the fortress against the advancing Russian army — a figure who still carries real weight locally. His mausoleum stands near the old centre, and the nearby Javad Khan Street has been rebuilt in traditional style as a pedestrian street of brick façades, small shops and tea houses.

The Shah Abbas Mosque was built in 1606, during the reign of the Safavid ruler whose name it carries, and remains the main Friday mosque of the city. Its red-brick construction, twin minarets and shaded courtyard of plane trees make it the natural centre of the old quarter — the surrounding square, with the caravanserai buildings and the tea house, is where the city gathers.

The Bottle House of Ganja is unlike anything else in the country. Built in the 1960s by Ibrahim Jafarov, its walls are faced with tens of thousands of glass bottles set into the mortar, along with coloured stones and mosaic portraits. Jafarov built it as a memorial to his brother, who did not return from the Second World War, and the Bottle House is still owned by the family. It takes ten minutes to see and is the photograph everyone brings home from Ganja.

The rest of the afternoon is free for a walk through the centre — the fountain square, the parks and the main avenue — with time for dinner before checking into your hotel. Overnight in Ganja city (accommodation can be arranged on request).

After breakfast at your hotel, you drive south into the mountains — about 45 minutes from the city.

Lake Goygol — the "Blue Lake" — was formed in 1139, when a major earthquake brought down part of Mount Kepez and dammed the river valley below. It now sits at roughly 1,550 metres, enclosed by pine and oak forest, and the water is clear enough to see straight to the bottom near the shore. The reserve around it is among the oldest protected areas in the country, and Goygol National Park remains largely undeveloped: a lakeside path, a few viewpoints, and forest in every direction. You have free time here to walk, photograph and sit with the view.

Higher in the park lies Maralgol, the smaller "Deer Lake", reached by a forest track above Goygol. It sees far fewer visitors and is worth the extra time if you enjoy walking. Access depends on the season and on current park regulations — your driver will confirm on the day.

On the way back you stop at Helenendorf, founded in 1819 by Swabian settlers from southern Germany and now part of the town of Goygol. The colonists laid out a single wide main street lined with steep-roofed houses, planted vineyards, and built the Lutheran church that still stands at the centre. Their descendants were deported in 1941, but the street plan, the architecture and a small museum remain — an unexpected piece of German history in the Caucasus.

You set off back in the afternoon and are dropped off directly at your hotel in Baku in the evening.
